The simplest colour palette can offer the biggest impact. I actually get goose bumps anytime I see rooms that rely on one hero hue for their bold style. Note that I said one; because the beauty of a monochrome scheme cannot be overemphasized. From dramatic tone-on-tone rooms to softer monochromatic schemes that incorporate neutrals like taupe and terracotta.  Indigo blue works for every level of colour confidence, second to black of course.

"Indigo dye has the ability, to transform simple organic fibres, into glorious textiles through creative human genius. But how did people know, that concealed within the fibres of this green plant, contained deep and mysterious blues? The Queen of all dyes holds her mystery’s, as the dye itself, is actually invisible." Culled from Objects of Ruin by Sofia Lorena Perelson

Amazing, right ?  My main source of indigo inspiration any day has to be textile - "Adire" , shibori, tie and dye , tapestry , they are extraordinary, simply captivating.  Maybe its the Abeokuta in me who knows . Let me digress a little, I read a book few years ago, titled : The Bluest Hands by Judith A. Byfield. It has absolutely nothing to do with colour; it was about the History of Women Dyers in Abeokuta (Nigeria) from 1890 to1940. Like these stories, I've seen memories of culture, place and space closely linked to design inspiration and I believe we will see the rise of more and more culture inspired furnishings with time, and I don’t mean Ankara or Aso-oke sofas (rolling eyes), I think we can do better as a people. I mean how hard can it be to channel your own culture, it’s all around you (story for another day).

Anyway, using blue in the home doesn't have to be applied literally. Light to dark blue furnishings can reflect this inspiration without “Baba blueing” your home. I think I just made up a word there, but you get my drift.

P.s: It’s pretty incredible how an artwork can make a monotone space look fabulous. Even if you do up your walls in almost black ( say blue black), you can still give it life using artwork . I'm a huge fan of contemporary African art, minimalist abstract paintings are my absolute favourite.
